Mace wins Structural Steel Design Award for Heathrow T5

24/07/2008

Mace Group has won a Structural Steel Design Award 2008 for the high standard of design achieved on the Heathrow T5 project.

Client BAA appointed Mace as construction manager for the new terminal, which handles up to 30 million passengers a year. Mace was responsible for the 150,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 90,000 tonnes of structural steel that constituted the building's structure and for the 7,000 workers on site at the peak of its construction.

The terminal building is 400m long by 160m wide and has a wide span roof that creates a shell around the internal superstructure. The design was the outcome of BAA's desire to create a building that would be an aviation landmark and could adapt over time to the ever-changing requirements of the industry.

Group Board Director Mark Reynolds said: "Mace are delighted to have won this award which aims to recognise the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel, and of its potential in efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation."
